Brazil

Brazilian experimental physicists participated in the DELPHI and ATHENA experiments at CERN. International Cooperation Agreements (ICAs) with CERN were signed in 1990 and 2006. Brazil now participates in the four LHC experiments ALICE, ATLAS, CMS and LHCb, and hosts Tier-2 nodes for the WLCG. Brazilian groups are also members of the ALPHA experiment at the AD facility, participate in ISOLDE experiments and in the recognized experiment AMS. Various Brazilian scientists also collaborate with CERN theorists. Brazil has a substantial involvement in the Pierre Auger cosmic-ray experiment in Argentina, which is also a recognized experiment at CERN.

The first and sixth CERN-Latin American School of High-Energy Physics (CLASHEP), for postgraduate students working towards a PhD, were organised in Itacuruçá in 2001 and in Natal in 2011. Brazil was part of the HELEN Network (2005-2009) and has participated in the EPLANET programme of the European Commission, which covered the period from February 2011 to January 2016.

In 2012, Brazil submitted an application for CERN Associate Membership. After renewed discussions, in September 2021 the CERN Council voted to grant to Brazil the status of Associate Member State. The Association Agreement was signed in March 2022. The Associate Membership will enter into force once Brazil has completed all necessary accession and ratification processes.
