Non-Member States

The Team advises the Director-General, the Head of International Relations and the CERN Management on matters concerning relations between CERN and its Non-Member states (NMS). Information on the particle physics effort in each country is collected and collated for use by the Directorate. Visits to the Laboratory by senior officials from NMS are also initiated, as well as exploratory visits to individual countries by CERN staff to establish useful contacts in the local physics institutes and high-technology industries.

When appropriate, and particularly where NMS physicists are collaborating in the experimental programme and the LHC project, the unit assists in the preparation of co-operation agreement between CERN and their institute or country. Team Members also participate in the co-ordinating committees between CERN and certain individual countries.

Some aspects of collaboration between NMS and CERN are supported in collaboration with external facilitators. For example, the European Union has been facilitating collaboration in high-energy physics between Latin America, CERN and its Member States through its HELEN programme, and the UNESCO International Basic Science Programme facilitates study visits to CERN by students and high-school teachers.
