An International Co-operation Agreement was signed in 1999 with the Secretaría Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (SENACYT). On the occasion of an international conference on particle physics in Ecuador in 2006, the university authorities did express an interest in CERN.
A few scientists’ nationals from Ecuador are participating in the CMS experiment through USA Institutes in FNAL and Boston University.
In March 2011 the National Secretary of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation from SENESCYT (former SENACYT) visited CERN and manifested Ecuador interest in further developing their cooperation with CERN and invited CERN Management to visit Ecuador.
A delegation from CERN visited Ecuador in July 2011 and a Protocol to the Cooperation Agreement of 1999 was signed between CERN and SENESCYT. This initiative together with the settlement of one Ecuadorian scientist in Quito was the seed to create a particle physics group which could in the near future become member of the CMS Collaboration and, at the same time, promote and coordinate the participation of Ecuadorian High School Teachers and Students in CERN’s programmes.
