The Malaysian Academy of Sciences (ASM) spearheaded collaborative projects with international institutes such as CERN, initiating a scientific exchange and collaboration programme involving scientists towards enhancing excellence in science, technology and innovation.

The experimental particle physics group at the University of Malaya was a member of the ZEUS experiment at DESY. This group subsequently considered options beyond ZEUS and expressed interest in developing a collaboration between Malaysia and CERN. To this end, the University of Malaya became a member of CMS.

Students from Malaysia participate in the CERN Summer Student Programme annually and possibilities for graduate students from Malaysian universities entering ‘sandwich’ courses on an LHC experiment are being considered.

Finally, the Malaysian Nuclear Agency is interested in collaborating with CERN in such areas as radiation protection, vacuum systems, magnets, cryogenics, silicon detector technologies and CERN’s connections to the medical sciences.
